Who wouldn’t love something as colourful as this salad? Tell me! I mean, this is such a great way to unwind during the summer days. Just fruits, juices, smoothies and ice cream. That’s what summers are for!

The weather here is taking its toll on us so badly in Bangalore that all you want to binge on is something chill, something cool, easy, and not too heavy in the tummy.

Much as you’re tempted to binge on deep fried food, junk or something too sugary, this healthy alternative is so much more refreshing and can be made in less than 20 minutes if everything is handy. Also, this is a great option for parties and potluck gatherings or even for picnics. Just ensure you ball the melons out and carry the berries along.

One such evening, when the man came back home from work and demanded a binge session to go with the IPL matches I decided to give him this instead of something that satiates the taste buds instantly and stays on the waist for a long time. He and his friends happily finished this boat of melon ball and berry salad in no time.

I did not use any dressing, no sugar, no added flavours, just fruits in a rind of watermelon, that’s all! Oh! if you’re wondering how I balled the melons, you get a melon baller that you can buy. or the best thing would be to use a tablespoon or measuring spoon with which you can scoop the melons out. Too easy and effortless. Seriously!

By the way, you could use fruits of your choice, now that the mango season is here from April to June, feel free to add as many mangoes as you want too.

I had some frozen strawberries and blueberries that I used. You can add green and black grapes too.

Instructions
  1. To begin making the melon ball and berry salad, take the watermelon and start balling them out with a melon baller/ a measuring spoon and scoop out as many balls as you can. Once it is done, ensure that you scoop out the rest of the flesh inside the watermelon so as to leave the rind alone. This will look like a shallow boat.
  2. Up next, scoop the cantaloupe and keep it aside.
  3. take the rind of the watermelon and start filling it with the watermelon and cantaloupe balls till it reaches the brim. Now add the strawberries, blueberries, kiwi and garnish with mint if needed. Serve immediately.
Recipe Notes
  • An important tip to follow while making this is to ensure that the watermelon and cantaloupe are just ripe and right so that when you ball them/scoop them out it comes out clean. You can also refrigerate the cantaloupe so that it can be scooped out easily.
  • You can add blackberries, raspberries, grapes, black grapes, cherries as well, totally your discretion to use what you wish to.
  • I skipped the dressing for this salad, but you can most definitely make a dressing that suits your palate. I like it natural and real.
