I have a confession to make – I HATE JACK FRUIT! YES! BUT it was only until I tasted this dessert at Go Native! Call it serendipity 🙂 So the story goes like this: I’d ordered a meal thali at Go native restaurant and one of the items they served had gone bad. I asked for a waive off on the bill and since they couldn’t oblige they gave me a complimentary dessert which was the best on their menu.

It was a takeaway and once I got back home I couldn’t wait to open it. Upon opening it, I saw a coconut bowl in which this pudding wobbled. I just scooped out a small spoon to taste it, the taste was familiar but I couldn’t discern it.  But even after two spoons I couldn’t until i found a piece of Jackfruit in it along with Ice Apple. DAYUMM.. I was so very pleasantly surprised! Like seriously 🙂 It was the best dessert I had in the longest time. So I decided to make it at the earliest at home.

I know Ice Apple ( Taati Nungu as it is known in Kannada) is seasonal, but when it is available around the season I’m telling you, this is the best dessert you can make out of it!

If you’re wondering why I hate(d) jackfruit so much here’s why – When I was a 10 year old, I had gobbled a bowl full of jackfruit and was down with an upset stomach. Ever since then the aversion towards jackfruit had amplified multi fold and Voila! This dessert was like a volte-face on the I-hate-Jackfruit me 🙂 I’d run away from any kinda desserts that had jackfruit in it.  Speaking of desserts, you don’t want to miss this sinful Banana Bread Tiramisu that will leave you in dessert coma 🙂 It is so easy to make and I promise it’ll be a super hit in the family.

Did you know? The word “jackfruit” comes from Portuguese jaca, which in turn is derived from the Malayalam language term chakka (Malayalam chakka pazham). When the Portuguese arrived in India at Kozhikode (Calicut) on the Malabar Coast (Kerala) in 1498, the Malayalam name chakka was recorded by Hendrik van Rheede (1678–1703) in the Hortus Malabaricus, vol. iii in Latin. Henry Yule translated the book in Jordanus Catalani’s (f. 1321–1330) Mirabilia descripta: the wonders of the East. – Source Wiki
